About Hawthorne

Built in 1951, Hawthorne Elementary is the most senior of Albert Lea's elementary schools. Hawthorne Elementary school currently serves approximately 420 Kindergarten through 5th grade students. Our school is founded on building relationships with students and families using Responsive Classroom practices while also using our CARES program - C stands for Cooperation, A stands for Assertion, R stands for Responsibility, E stands for Empathy, and S stands for Self Control.  Our building staff believe in this program and are proud to work with our students so they can display CARES in school, on field trips, and across our great community!

In addition to a rich social-emotional foundation, children engage in high quality, well-rounded learning experiences in literacy, math, social studies, and science that strives to meet the specific needs of each student based on Minnesota State Standards. Many of our dedicated teachers and staff provide after school clubs, such as coding and student council along with providing targeted services to specific students to extend learning beyond the traditional school day. Staff also participate in weekly Professional Learning Communities (PLC's) in order to collaborate and continually adjust to what individual students need to be successful at Hawthorne.  Overall, we want to empower our students to engage in their learning and build a solid foundation for their educational journeys.
